To maintain its beauty and keep it clean and shiny, you need to clean and maintain it regularly. Here are helpful tips to clean slate floor:

Sweeping

Sweep slate floor regularly to prevent dirt and dust from getting into the grout and pores. Sweep using a soft-bristled broom, HOOVER vacuum cleaner, or a dry microfiber mop. Use a vacuum cleaner that has a soft brush attachment to prevent scratching the surface. Do not use a vacuum with a beater brush attachment because this will scratch the surface of your slate floor. Never use a stiff-bristled broom to sweep the slate floor because it will scratch the surface.

Mopping

Mop the slate floor with a neutral pH cleaner. It is not advisable to use tile cleaners or vinegar to clean slate floor because it will destroy the finish. Mix a neutral pH cleaner with hot water. Do not use cold water because it will not remove the dirt and grease. Fill a bucket with hot water and add a neutral pH cleaner. Using a soft-bristled broom, dip it in the solution and mop the entire floor. Make sure to rinse the broom and dip it into the solution often so that you will use a clean broom. Use a terry cloth towel or a squeegee to dry the floor.

Disinfectant

Clean slate floor with a disinfectant. This will kill germs and bacteria on the floor. Mix a disinfectant with hot water and mop the entire floor. Disinfectants will not damage the finish of slate floor.

Baking soda

Remove tough stains on slate floor using baking soda. Mix baking soda with hot water and mop the entire floor. Baking soda will remove tough stains like dirt and grease. Baking soda will not damage the finish of slate floor.

Stain removal

Remove stains on slate floor using hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is a mild bleaching agent that will remove stains on slate floor. It will also remove rust stains. Soak a clean cloth in hydrogen peroxide and place it on the stain. Let it sit for a few minutes until the stain is removed. Wipe the area with a clean cloth.

Sealing

Seal slate floor to protect it from damage. It is not advisable to use wax on slate floor because it will damage the finish. Wax will create a sticky coat that will attract dirt and dust. Seal slate floor with a penetrating sealer. This will protect the floor from damage and moisture. Apply the sealer on the entire floor. Let it dry overnight. After a few hours, apply a second coat of sealer. Let it dry overnight. Before using the floor, remove the dust and dirt using a vacuum cleaner or a microfiber mop.
